What is Summer Design Lab?
The Summer Design Lab is a 3-week course especially designed for high school students to introduce them to the world of design. You will learn many different facets of design, but most importantly, how to approach a design problem through critical thinking. Our world renown instructors will be instructing you as they would college student – how to think, to approach, to use the tools you have to solve practical issues.
Who should attend Summer Design Lab?
The Summer Design Lab is tailored toward high school students in grades 10-12 between ages 16-18 years old. You should be a highly-motivated individual who has an interest in design, regardless of whether you choose to attend an art school or a traditional college.
Students of this program will have a better understanding of what it will be like to take design at a post-secondary level and be better equipped to post-secondary learning.
Who is eligible to register?
- You must be interested in design
- You must be a registered high school student – grade 9-12
- You are between 15-18 years old
- English language proficiency is mandatory
What do I submit with the application?
If you’re are applying, please include:
- Completed application
- Photo/image of your artwork
- Written 250 word essay on your artwork
- Letter of recommendation from an art teacher or guidance counsellor (optional)

What is the application process?
There are two scenarios to the application process:
Scenario 1: Early bird discount. Apply BEFORE or ON March 15th, 2016.
1. Register online.
2. Receive invoice for deposit to be paid by March 15th, 2016
3. Submit completed application by March 31, 2016
4. Review application and send acceptance/non-acceptance letter (rolling basis)
Scenario 2: NO early bird discount. Apply AFTER March 15th, 2016
1. Submit completed application by the end of June 2015
2. Review application and send acceptance/non-acceptance letter (rolling basis)
What does Summer Design Lab cost?
The comprehensive summer program is comparable to US summer pre-college programs. This includes all fundamental art supplies required for studio as well as planned program activities.
There are also merit based scholarships available for students.
How does the early bird registration work?
Get $300 off the regular program fee when you apply before or on March 15th, 2015.
When should I submit my application?
Simply, as soon as possible.
Since space is limited, early application is advised. Applications are dated and reviewed on a first-come, first-served basis, and are processed starting in the Spring. Incomplete applications are not processed until all missing parts are supplied, so be sure to include all attachments and required payments and signatures.
Students will be accepted no later than June 30.
When will I be notified of an admission decision?
Applicants will be notified on a rolling basis once we receive your application.
Are there any additional fees?
All costs and fees associated with planned Program activities (e.g., museum/venue admissions fees) are included with the tuition for the program. However, students are responsible for any sundry purchases during these activities.
Additional fees are required for room and board. These fees are determined once a Homestay location has been finalized.
In addition, travel to and from the Summer Design Lab at the start and end of the program (and during excused absences), are the responsibility of the student and their parents or guardians. Food and drink can be purchased at on-site restaurant or brought to the venue.
Where is the location of Summer Design Lab
The course will be conducted at Artscape Youngplace in Toronto. The rich heritage of the site and beautiful nearby park will serve as inspiration for our budding artists and designers.

What am I going to learn?
That is a great question! If you apply yourself and be focused during the program, you will take a lot with you. The skills that you learn here at Summer Design Lab will be applicable for the rest of your life (even if you decide not to pursue design as a career).
How long is the program?
The program runs for approximately 3 weeks (depending on the year) or around 100 hours. Some students who want to stay late (beyond scheduled hours) to work on their project are more than welcome to.
What does a typical day look like?
Every day is different.
Some days we will start with a lecture and then followed by studio time. Some days are completely studio time and some days involve field trips We keep our schedule flexible to make sure that each student gets the attention they need to help them understand the material being taught.
We strongly believe that students should apply immediately what they have learned to get the most of the lesson.
Are there breaks?
We encourage breaks so that students can rejuvenate themselves. A typical day will include 1-2 breaks and lunch. We typically allow a 1 hour lunch.
Do you supply meals?
We don’t supply meals, but lunches (sit down or takeaway) are available at local restaurants. Alternatively, we encourage students to pack their own meal as it would save time and money.
Do you cancel classes during the program?
We will never cancel a class unless there are unusual circumstances and/or event. In the event of a cancellation, all students and parents/guardians will be notified of the cancellation and next steps.
We will also try to make up for lost time. We want to ensure that students and parents get the full experience.
How big are your classes?
We try to keep the classes to a manageable size. We want to ensure that each student gets valuable time with the teacher to help them either understand concepts or be mentored during studio time.
Do you provide overnight accomodation?
No. Summer Design Lab is a day program only.
Most students who come from out of town, typically stay with friends or family. In the event that you do not have family or friends here, there is the The Canada Homestay Network. They have been around since 1995 and have served tens of thousands of students find a home away from home in Canada. This organization is also used by the Toronto District School Board (the largest school in the Greater Toronto Area) to help find housing for international students. Definitely contact them to find out more details.
There is also a local Homestay that we work with that students and parents like. They are located close the facility (within walking distance) and in a safe area. Students who require accommodation will get first choice to accept this Homestay.
Do you provide any type of subsidy?
We don’t provide subsidies, but we do offer scholarships to students.
What are the scholarship amounts?
The scholarship amounts vary and are determined through merit. We have each application reviewed by the staff.
Do I have to apply to get a scholarship?
Yes. Applying for the scholarship at Summer Design Lab is similar to applying for scholarship at a major art college or university. You can download the application on the student registration page.
When will I know if I get a scholarship?
If you apply for the scholarship at the same time as your application, you will be notified shortly thereafter.
How many scholarships are available?
When the funds set aside run out, there will be no more scholarships available. We advise you to apply for the scholarship when you submit your application.
